Baraza is one of the fundamental structures of Starehe. It is a forum where the director and the staff meet every Friday and discuss matters that concern them. They point out the problems that they are experiencing and whether or not they are happy with the administration.
Anybody is free to ask any question to the Director provided that he does so in a polite way using parliamentary language. The Director is the speaker of Baraza and he decides who is to talk. The students are allowed to criticize anybody provided they do not mention directly the person concerned.
No one can victimize anyone who critised them in Baraza. Matters discussed in Baraza are taken with great seriousness and the director may be forced to answer if anything agreed on in Baraza is not implemented.
As a result of it success in Starehe, many people have decided to adopt the Baraza. For example it has been adopted by schools in the UK and many in Kenya. The Baraza gives one the opportunity to express himself while at the same time eliminating the gap between the students and the administration. It therefore ensures order in the school and peaceful coexistence in the school community.
Baraza has produced very brilliant ideas in the last years. The idea of Voluntary Service for example came up in Baraza and was implemented. It was raised by a student in Baraza who observed and saw that the students of Starehe needed to give back to society what has been given to them. Up to now this idea has realized fruits and has made Starehe known. |
