Endowment is a fund whereby a capital sum is invested and only the interest accruing from such an investment is used to pay a boy's fees and upkeep. This ensures a free place for a boy at Starehe Boys' Centre in Perpetuity. To be a substitute family and offer free education, Starehe needs funds and for a long time, it has relied on individual sponsorship of boys, mainly from overseas. Currently, it costs about US$ 1,000 p.a. to keep a boy at Starehe (this covers food, clothing, bedding, toiletries, medical and dental care and educational costs).
